Science of Breath Radio #52: Focus

September 1st, 2010

science of breath radio zumbi

A wise man once told me that, “Whatever you focus on will become stronger in your life.” I heard that as a youth, but it’s concise wisdom has stuck with me through my evolution into a man. It is a simple axiom, yet carries profound truth and insight. In this day and age, it is necessary to be aware of such an idea.
What does focus mean to you? It is probably different for everyone that is asked such a question. For me, focus is simply where my attention lies. If I happen to be on twitter all day, I’m pretty much focused on interacting and sharing in the thoughts of a varied population of people. If I am spending my time at the yoga studio, then my focus is on the development of a mind-body connection. You see, where we place the gaze of our mind’s eye will inevitably lead us in that direction.
This understanding is the pillar upon which marketing and advertising are built. These disciplines have realized that by shifting the focus of viewers, that they are able to captivate the imagination. Take a moment and think about how you are focusing your attention.
Are you being mindful of where your third eye resides? Is your reality a conscious selection, or are you passively focused on the whirlwinds of the world around you? These are questions that only you can answer. But, bear in mind, whatever you are focused on will grow stronger in your life. Choose well my friends…

August 31, 2010–Oakland, CA–The Burnerz are a new duo consisting of Zumbi of the hip-hop group Zion I and the Houston-based Trackmasters producer, The Are. Now, after a year of scratching out rhymes, making beats, mixing, and mastering, The Burnerz—who met on tour in Europe in 2003—just completed one of the most energizing independent hip-hop albums of the year.

The Burnerz recruited The Grouch, OneBeLo, Martin Luther, and C-Holiday for the album. “Instead of going through layers of editing (like we do for Zion I),” explains Zumbi of his approach, “We tried to capture the raw emotion of both lyrics and beats for this album.”

Zumbi has always set a new standard for socially conscious hip-hop and this album is no exception. The track “The Edge” where The Grouch and Zumbi spit rhymes about snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. “It’s about feeling hopeless and fearful, but having just enough strength to turn around and confront one’s demons,” explains Zumbi.

As the charismatic emcee of Bay Area group Zion I, Zumbi has released six critically acclaimed albums along with numerous EPs and mixtapes. Zumbi contributed to the Grammy-Award winning group Linkin Park’s album Reanimation as well as the BassNectar album, and mixtapes for the Roots, K’naan and Q-Tip. Currently, Zion I are touring with reggae sensations Rebelution. Their seventh album Atomic Clock drops Nov 9.

Veteran producer, The Are, hails from Houston, TX but his production style is more drum-heavy east coast in sound than southern. He began his career with the trio K-Otix in the early mid 90s, touring Europe and releasing the 2001 LP, Universal, and contributing two tracks for EMC (Punchline, Masta Ace, Wordsworth, and Stricklin). But, it’s been within the last couple years, that The Are has flourished: After signing with the production team the Trackmasters, he produced singles for Keisha Cole (“Where this Love?”), Lil Kim and Lords of the Underground, as well as many others. His Michael Jackson instrumental remix CD, Dem Damb Jacksons, became an online collectors item in 2007. Finally, he produced the first single off the forthcoming Keisha Cole album.

Fans will have to wait until October 12 to hear The Burnerz, but they promise to leak new singles (not on the record) every week until then.

Science of Breath Radio #51: the 14th Amendment

August 19th, 2010

diversity

America, the beautiful, was born out of necessity. In many ways, our country represents a new age experiment in diversity. As exemplified in the old School House Rock skit, we are born out of a melting pot of cultures. The natives of America still live and breath throughout our culture, though we struggle to recognize their influence. The old country is represented through the vast array of Europeans here: Italians, Germans, Dutch, Spanish, Greek, etc. Africa is alive and well in it’s ancestors who were brought to these shores by force, and in turn have shaped culture by our very essence and being. Both Asia and Latin America course through the veins of the US, having been present since our inception. We are all apart of the story of America. Thus, the 14th amendment seeks to recognize that anyone born in this country has a right to contribute a chapter in it’s history.
Yet, today we see that there is a growing backlash against the very tenants that we are based upon. It seems that smalls minds from coast to coast are mounting on attack on liberty. The “birther” movement seeks to oust the President from his seat, because they claim that he was not “born” on American soil. The battle around immigration has also been a hotbed for protest against what the 14th amendment calls for as equity. These people have obviously forgotten what America was, and is built upon. Without all of the diverse gifts from around the world, we could not have come this far. Quite possibly, we would not even exists without the blood, sweat, and tears of the global community living within our borders. To push back against the 14th Amendment, is to denounce the essence of what America is. Out of ignorance and fear, some seek to wipe away our history and create a new monoculture. I am sorry people. It won’t work. That just isn’t the American way.

Science of Breath #50: Zion I & the Grouch Edition

August 11th, 2010

The collaboration is a unique aspect of hip hop. This tradition is directly descended from the jazz roots that are a part of the gumbo that came together to form our culture. The technique of joining different groupings of musicians to expand into new directions is necessary to the evolution of the music. These pairings have been used to mentor musicians, as well as create new styles, and genres. It is thus, an essential aspect of the perpetuation of music which represents the feelings of the people.
Thus, Zion I & the Grouch decided to link up for our first album in 2006, entitled Heroes in the City of Dope. I learned a lot in the process, as I am used to writing albums by myself for the most part, outside of editing ideas. Yet, working with the Grouch is much more of a collective effort in terms of forming concepts around songs. It is always inspiring to get a fresh perspective or idea that I would not normally think of on my own. The collaboration is a creative push, a challenge to go further and see what level of beauty can be achieved.
On today’s show, we get to chop it up with all the homeys on a more intimate note about technology, the future of music, and staying centered in a world gone wild. AmpLive holds down the tables, blessing up with choice selections, and the Grouch and I chop up game about life. Tune in..tune up..and evolve.

Science of Breath Radio #49 Fear Not

August 4th, 2010

51

Fear. What is this thing? Is it an emotion, a feeling, or a need? I’m not sure exactly how to categorize it, but I feel as though this thing called fear is a tool that is used to pollute our thoughts and minds. A conspiracy you say? Hardly, its just that misery loves company.
I notice this trend when I browse the internet and read the commentary below videos and news articles. The comments posted generally have a negative tone to them. They are often accompanied by racists quiffs, when appropriate, and a blatant disconnection with human suffering. Quite possibly all the autonomy online has exposed the true level of fear that, we humans still possess. It’s scary right? Ah, not so much.
Fear, as far as I know, is an instinctual response that was developed as a means for survival as we developed as a species. In modern life, it still serves its purpose, yet we seem to crave it more than is necessary. It feels that we are constantly pumped full of things to fear thru the media: recession, violence, the BP spill, war. You get the drift. But, what do we really have to fear?
I propose that we relinquish our need to fear anything. To respect is good, to fear is to paralyze one’s self. Just take a moment and imagine what our world would be like if we no longer feared one another because we looked different. What if we were no longer afraid of different religions and cultures? Could we possibly move unto a higher level of awareness as a collective? I think that is very probable once we do away with fear. The best way to treat fear is to turn around and face what is haunting you. It’s never quite as bad as we think it is, and if it truly is that dire, you might as well get it out of the way sooner than later. Releasing it will allow fresh energy to flow in and through your life. Now, go into the world, with courage as your guide.

Science of Breath Radio #47: Struggle & Resistance

July 22nd, 2010

571

I once read a metaphysician’s quote that said “The world is as we see it.” Hence, stating that we color the world around us with our own unique perspective. However, I would like to change it to “The world is as we think it.” Indeed, our thoughts are powerful tools. So powerful in fact that they can build just as quickly as they can destroy. Why aren’t we being taught the power of our thoughts? Well, that my friends, is a question that has been asked throughout time immemorial.
It could be due to the fact that the mind is where power is defined. Thus, as stated by Carter G Woodson, “If you can control a man’s thinking, then you do not have to control his actions.” Sadly, this statement still rings true today. The “powers that be” recognize this fact and use it to their full advantage every waking moment. This is the idea behind advertising. Most people feel that they are unaffected by it. They talk about how they watch TV for 4-5 hours a day, and that it is simply entertainment. But, they obviously don’t understand the nature of the subconscious mind.
The subconscious mind is like a vast storehouse of energy for our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. Whatever is fed to the subconscious influences the how we feel, think, and act. By constantly remaining a passive witness to society’s ideals and impulses, we allow ourselves to be casually programmed. Does this sound unbelievable? Check any basic psychology class, and it will break down the basic blueprint of how the mind works. What you will find is that, the subconscious is a more powerful determinant of behavior than the “conscious” mind, which consists of what we normally think of as thoughts. The subconscious is the ground from which our thoughts take root and flower.
So, what happens when one no longer accepts the programming of their subconscious mind? New thoughts, feelings, and beliefs are unleashed when we unplug from the vast web of influencers in our environment. In a way, we are freed to explore the inner workings of ourselves, the great vastness within. Thus, the true revolution begins within. To change the world around us, we must first change the world inside. This is the essence of struggle and resistance. The struggle to free the mind of senseless babble, while resisting the lure of the world of senses around you. Your mind is the center of this battlefield. Fight the good fight.

Science of Breath #46: the Day of the Oscar Grant Verdict

July 18th, 2010

45

As humans, enthralled with all the wonders of modern life, most of us are constantly caught in the spin cycle. We have responsibilities and aspirations, let alone biological needs that we must care for. We have jobs to work, and food that we must put on the table. With all of this going on, it is easy to forget that we are living out history day by day. At times, great opportunities lunge our way, but our attention is absorbed and thus, we miss the chance to participate in the history which is being created around us. Today, is one of those moments when we have been called to that moment, to include ourselves in the rapidly changing world around us.
This show begins with Vinroc and I, doing our normal thing, breaking down the good word, and playing some music to ease the soul. Yet, by the end of the segment, we are told, while on air, that the Oscar Grant verdict will be released a mere hour after our show ends. As we finished the show, Youth Radio was already shutting down in preparation of the “civil unrest” which was in my opinion being indirectly encouraged by the media. The mood of the entire building suddenly turned somber and expectant. Vin and I left the building, and as we did it was obvious that the entire city of Oakland had received the same news. Cars were rushing towards on ramps, and traffic was already building up. Well well, the news sure did a good job of rustling up paranoia. As I navigated thru the streets towards my next destination, I could not help but notice the vast differences in the way that people were responding. Some folks enjoyed a quick pick up game of soccer not a 5 minute walk away from downtown, while others were already scrambling to get to the what would eventually the epicenter of the ruckus, 14th and Broadway. This show captures a quick moment in history that we should not soon forget.

Science of Breath Radio #45: the Oscar Grant Verdict

July 7th, 2010

oscar-grant

The concept of society is based on rules and agreements. The authorities constantly program the people with ideas that they can either accept or reject. Acceptance breeds inclusion and greater degrees of comfort if you will. Rejection, on the other hand, is basically tantamount to declaring all out warfare on the system. When the rules of society are not obeyed, we have police and the legal system which are supposed to deal with the corruption. However, what happens when the authorities themselves make a mistake in perpetuating their precious societal mores? How do the people governed by, and accepting of these laws react when they are attacked by the very same authorities that are supposed to protect them? These are the questions that surround the Oscar Grant verdict coming up this week.
The anticipation hangs in the air, thick that the rapture of swollen vines. Windows are already boarded up here in the studio and throughout downtown Oakland in case rioters take to the streets. There have been whispers that OPD is calling in back up from as far south as LA, in addition to many of the surrounding suburbs in the Bay. It feels as if everyone is expecting the worst reaction possible. Do they know something that we don’t? If justice is truly served, and Johanne Meserhle, the murderer of Oscar Grant is convicted, than there is no reason to protest. Oscar’s life can never be given back, but a ruling of manslaughter would at least acknowledge some degree of negligence. I am concerned that Meserhle is acquitted. In that case, there is definite reason to be angered. We were angry already, but this is the stuff that destruction is made off.
I wonder if this had been a young white man shot face down on the Bart in San Francisco would it even be a question as to the guilt of the murderer. No, what is being called into question is the value of black life in American society. How easy is it to kill a young black man in cold blood, and without reason? It seems that they are telling us what they think of us with every deliberation and negation of justice that takes place. I understand the rage, but please, breaking the windows of small shop owners downtown will not do anything to bring redemption. Calm and cool minds will prevail.
Tune in to this week’s show as special guest J Period, Robert Collins, Amp Live, and 1-O.A.K. discuss the importance of how we handle the verdict.

Science of Breath #44: World Cup Version

June 25th, 2010

1242301298_mandela_world_cup1

I once read somewhere that sports were a metaphor, of war. If so, then we are living in violatile times, although the World Cup, is more of a grand spectacle. Being that, the whole world is involved, the political and social ramifications of the “football” can hardly be denied. Honestly, I haven’t been interested in “football” since I was a youth. But since the World Cup in ‘06, I’ve been riveted by the collective attention which it demands. In many ways, it’s bigger than the Olympics. There is much greater parity, which makes the competition all the more thrilling. Although juggernauts like Brazil and Argentina feel pre-destined to dominate, smaller countries like Uruguay, Switzerland, Ghana, and the Netherlands are able to eek their way onto the world stage. It is truly fascinating when we consider how many eyes and minds are focused on this one event.
What could we accomplish as human beings if we all got together and focused on ending poverty and oppression in the same way, and with the same passion that we view sports? I think we could truly change the world. Just a thought. Science of Breath…on the move.

Whoa! World spin..begin..faster..FASTER! That’s how I feel y’all. I know..intense right? Indeed. No worries..we’ll be good. I just got to let it out every now and then. There seems to be so much going on these days. At the tip of my mind remains the tragedy of the BP spill. What have we done? I have a distinct feeling that we’ll be dealing with the aftermath of this for the remainder of our lives. I read something that said that the leak was spilling over 2 million gallons a day!! What? That is completely impossible to fathom in many ways, but it sounds like its easily the worst environmental disaster in history. How will the ocean be effected by such negligence? It’s scary to contemplate the ramifications. Still, we keep on pushin’ thru. I pray for the good of all people, that we may learn from this. We cannot continue to repeat this type of behavior, the Earth will not allow it. Remember, we are blessed to have this environment which is perfectly suited to our beingness. Pray for healing..pray for peace. Bless…

Science of Breath Radio #42: the Xenophobic Conundrum

June 7th, 2010

The word xenophobe means “fear of outsiders”. For me, this can mean foreign people, foreign ideas, or extraterrestrials…take your pick. On this week’s show, house DJ Vinroc and I build on two very pertinent topics. We begin by touching on the tragedy of the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast region. The persistence of our world leader’s to use oil and gas as the staple of the world economy has lead us to yet, another crossroads. Will we ever learn from our mistakes? Oil is not a renewable power source. It is also finite. We will soon come to the end of our oil supply worldwide. Some say that this will happen within the next 20-50 years. What are we waiting for? Armageddon? Don’t get me started.
Secondly, being that we at the Science of Breath pride ourselves in thinking outside of the box, we discussed the concept of aliens making contact with humans. Many may view this as sheer science fiction. However, anything is possible when we consider the fact that our galaxy is almost completely unexplored. We haven’t even thoroughly analyzed the ocean. Are we truly the only “intelligent” life in the universe? I highly doubt that. It seems that our self proclaimed importance is a symptom of our ego, and creating the idea that reality bends around our need to be the center of all things. We question what it would be like if extraterrestrials actually made themselves known to us. How would humanity respond? I assume there would be dramatic upheaval, both philosophically and psychologically. How would you react? Join us for an inside look at the future…

Science of Breath Radio #40: Respect to Malcolm X

May 20th, 2010

malcolm_x_-_mosque1

In respect of our great ancestor El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, better known as Malcolm X, I dedicate this show to the incredible work that he did in order to uplift our people. Davey D blasted out a great tidbit on his twitter yesterday. This is vintage audio of 2 FBI agents actively trying to coerce Malcolm into snitching on his own organization, the Black Muslims. With rare eloquence and resilience, we hear how Malcolm cleverly rebukes their feeble attempts. It is one of the best old school audio gems that I’ve heard in ages. To hear him break down the fidgety embargoes of the agents is priceless. Yet, this was recorded in 1963. The brother was assassinated a short 2 years later in 1965. It seems that the government tried one approach, and once they saw that it wasn’t working, they went to their old faithful. Straight up murder. Go figure. All praises to the brother. They killed his body, but they couldn’t end his legacy. Science of Breath on the move…

The music industry is in total disarray. Let the heads roll. It is better for us, the artists, this way. Why you ask, as you shake your head and roll your eyes? There is less control of the “system” now, then ever before. No longer do major labels hold complete sway over the marketplace. I am not a fool, I recognize the great influence that labels still have on the mass consciousness of the people. Yet, at the same time, I feel that independent musicians, filmmakers, and authors have opportunities today, that simply didn’t exist 10 years ago.

There is enough technology available that anyone can damn near craft a record and release it. This is a beautiful thing. Artistic expression is at an all time high. The only thing that can hold you back in this moment is you. If you want it, the world awaits your passion to possess their attention. What will you say when you finally have the blogosphere at your beck and call? The only limit is your creativity. This is your time. To quote Nas, “the world is yours, the world is yours”. The independent route of releasing your own music is not an easy one, but it is a liberating one. Be free of the machine, express your inner soul, and ride the current of wild creativity that pulses within your heart. Do not hold back, and do not be scared. Instead, practice fearlessness. May the force be with you. Churrrch…

Science of Breath Radio #38: Encounters w/ a Sea Turtle

May 7th, 2010

hawaii-giant-sea-turtle

The islands of Hawaii are magical. With it’s raw beauty and ancient culture, it is hard to find anything in the West that compares to it’s natural elegance. We were blessed to be able to spend last week there, both working and chilling. The first half of the trip was spent on Maui, deep within the Grouch’s rain forest hideout studio. Complete with hordes of geckos, mosquitos, flying roaches, and cane spiders (which are the size of a large man’s hand..), we sunk into the landscape and fed off of the simplicity and silence which was ever present. We were able to really sit down and concentrate on the new Zion I & the Grouch album. It felt good to be in that creative space where time feels like it’s standing still. The cellphone felt obsolete, the TV was nonexistent. I believe that this is the best way to connect with the inner voice and create true art. We freaked about 5 songs in two days. I can’t wait for y’all to hear the gumbo that we’ve been cooking up. The album is roughly slated for release in February of 2011.

The second half of the trip was spent in Oahu. Compared to Maui, Oahu felt like New York. Maui is so stripped down and simple. It feels like only Earth, Sky, and Ocean exist there. While, in Honolulu, I was transported right back to downtown SF with a quickness. We rocked a show out there at the Next Door which went off. After that, it was time to chill. After sleeping the entire next day away, I was finally prepared for some adventure the following day. I was rewarded with a dope trip to a secluded, almost private beach on Oahu’s gold coast. Next, my highest wish was granted, when our homey Chris said that he would take us surfing.

We hit the surf with a fury, as I struggled to keep up with my guide’s staggering pace. He leapt up on wave after wave, and I guess he must of inspired me, because I had the best day I’ve ever had of surfing. Pretty soon, however, my arms started to go limp from all of the paddling. I was getting worn out. I missed three good waves in a row after paddling with whatever was left over of my strength. Consequently, I found myself washed out into a lonesome patch of ocean. There were no other surfers in the immediate vicinity, so I took the opportunity to just kick it, and enjoy being in the water. Suddenly, I saw a long patch of olive grey skin rise out of the ocean. What the hell is that? I tried to calm myself down by telling myself it was a seal. Right? I waited with bated breath as the swollen mass sunk down into the deep blue. When it re-emerged, a beaklike face jutted out of the rippling surface, and slowly a turtles head began bobbing up and down whimsically. A giant sea turtle! I was stunned, both terrified and excited at the same time. I had never encountered such a large creature so close to me in the ocean and admittedly, I was shook. I pulled my legs out of the water and onto the board, and just sat there watching the turtle go up and down for air. At first, I wanted to shout out a warning, but my mind consoled me that turtles were not known to be dangerous, it wasn’t a shark after all. The deep orbital eyes gazed at me, almost as if laughing at the uncomfortable way I was now sitting on the board. I almost laughed at myself. Yet, I continued to stare at the peaceful being for about 5 minutes. I began to feel as if I was having some type of spiritual communion, with the mix of fear, revelry, and adrenaline all going off at once. Slowly, I relaxed out of my trance as I realized that time was going by and I was not catching any waves. I slowly turned around and paddled away. It was time to return to the shore. I had gotten everything that I needed out of the experience. The next thing I knew, I nice wave was upon me. I paddled hard and caught the best ride of the day, almost all the way in to the shore. Mission accomplished. From this point on, I will feel a special connection with the giant sea turtle. It felt as though an old friend had come to say what up. What a wonderful memory. Bless…

Science of Breath Radio #37: R.I.P. Guru

April 29th, 2010

article_imagephp

Broadcastin’ live from the beautiful island of Hawaii this week, I’ve been soaking up the mellow vibes of the ocean and recording a grip of music. We’re out here recording music for the new Zion I & the Grouch album, which will be out in February. It’s always interesting to travel and then record in a new locale, because the new location inevitably brings about new feelings and expressions. Add that to the fact that we were on Maui for most of our stay, which is extremely chill compared to the hustle mode of the Bay. I’ve been having a grand ol’ time of getting acquainted with nature, and having the chance to listen to my thoughts without outside interruption. Needless to say, it’s been a much needed respite.
This week, I had to dedicate half of the show to Guru of Gang Starr, who finally succumbed to what they are calling cancer last week. Unfortunately, the drama has yet to cease, as his “partner” (?), Solar produced a scathing letter supposedly written by Guru on his deathbed which basically dissed DJ Premier and completely downplayed the Gang Starr legacy. It feels like this guy Solar wrote the letter, which is wack as hell. Why would anyone do such a thing? Weird. To add to that, Sway interviewed him and questioned him about the whole situation with Guru, and Solar came off very defensive and nervous. The dude just seems like he’s lying. Why, I don’t know. It’s sad that such a legend had to leave with an ackward departure. Regardless, of his attempts, Solar could never throw shade on the Gang Starr name. R.I.P. Guru, you live on thru music and memory.

Big up all massive and crew! Thank you for tuning in for another week of exciting new styles from across the world. This week, I’m broadcasting from sunny Los Angeles, CA. We had a show at UCLA last night at the annual event, the Mighty Mic. Each year, they throw a well organized concert in order to bring awareness to injustice in any form. This year was focused on the Congo, and how the country has been destabilized since the mid 90’s. One startling fact is that nearly 6 million have died in the country since ‘98, but yet, the western media is not even willing to sneeze about the tragedy which is occurring there. Congo is rich in many minerals which provide the basis for electronics and technology. If these resources suddenly begin to dry up, we’ll probably start hearing the Congo referenced on the news. But in the now, know that our brothers and sisters across the water need help. The show was dope last night, except for the fact that I busted my lip on the mic whilst leaping around. Definitely not an enjoyable experience, while broadcasting I was alternating between icing my golfball lip, and selecting the tunage. All to the good…enjoy..tune in..and tune up!

Today..I have a lot on my mind. Mostly, about what I need to do, that I very much dislike doing. Should I even breath the word? Here we go..Taxes. Blah. Every year I have to pick through piles and piles of white receipts, in search of profit and loss. It’s one of the joys of being a business owner. So I’m thinking that today’s show is going to give me the energy I’ll need for the next couple days to knock this out. I found a nice lil gem by Gil Scott Heron ft Nas. The OG has been one of my favorites since back in the day, with his angst filled croonage. If you don’t know, and you’re into soul music, google him. Also, stumbled on to some classic club music, as delivered by Pandora.com. I love this website because it’s such a good place to learn about new music. They have some technology that groups songs and artists according to varied styles and emphasis. Very dope. Enjoy the show..blessed..tune in, tune up!

Science of Breath Radio #33: in Honor of Erykah Badu

April 1st, 2010

0x0_2820885

With all the changes currently sweeping the planet, it is of utmost importance to embrace the concept of change. It has been said that change is the only constant, and I believe that this is true. Every once in a while, a single courageous soul stands up to embody a new idea who’s time has come. In this case, this person is Erykah Badu. With an already illustrious career behind her, she has pushed the envelope of artistry with her latest video “Window Seat”. In it, she gets out of a car and walks to the spot where JFK was assassinated, all while undressing herself. At the end of the video, she lies naked after being shot with the words “Groupthink” spilling from her prone body. In my mind, this is the ultimate collaboration of art and activism. The message which she sends forth is an edgy one, that I fear many will miss. She is questioning conformity, and society’s norms, by literally stripping herself of all pretense. The Dallas PD is currently questioning whether to pull up charges against her. Another woman has stated that she will sue Ms. Badu. It is my opinion that change is hard for many of us, and that the backlash she faces, symbolizes the natural resistance that human beings have to change. Erykah, I am writing this to let you know that we stand with you, and we face the winds of change together. Peace..

Live once again, from your traveling bard/MC/host! I’m dropping this one from a hotel in the higher heights of Whistler, Canada’s snow flecked mountaintops. I was really enjoying being home, but yes indeed, I’m right back out on the road. There are pros and cons to everything in the universe. This is the subtle balance often referred to as the yin and the yang. There is definitely a rare beauty in being able to travel the world performing music and rocking crowds. Yet, it does not come without struggle, hard work, lack of sleep, and countless hours driving into distant towns, cities, and villages. Let me not wax too philosophically though, this tour seems like it’s going to be fun. I really enjoy Canada, especially Vancouver. The layout is reminiscent of San Fran, but the architecture feels more edgily modern, and the ever-present mountain range sets it distinctly apart. I was feeling easy doing this set, and the music reflects that. I drop some reflective hip-hop tunes, alongside some soul music I’m feeling, and towards the end gallop into some progressive house. You know my steez!!! Tune in and tune up…Ites!

When I called Vinroc to see if he could come thru today’s show, I had no idea what the topic of the day would be. Yet, when I asked if he had any ideas, he replied quickly with “Let’s talk about the water problem which is facing the world right now.” Water problem? Do you mean the California drought? Hardly. The problem of drinkable water, is being discussed as one of the most foreboding dilemmas that will soon plague humanity. No, this is not a doom and gloom show, it’s all about communicating information and raising awareness. In many 3rd world countries this problem is already being felt. We in the “1st world”, are kept ignorant to the cold reality of private corporations attempting to takeover the water supply, and sell it back to us in bottled form at a higher price. It’s pure insanity, and the systematic corporate greed which endeavors this type of philosophy is unsustainable. Vinroc and I discuss different ways that people can inform themselves and spread the word about this insidious trend. Tune in and UP!!

Science of Breath #30: Gang Starr Edition

There are some musical legends that are of monumental influence, yet still manage to fly under the radar of commercial popularity. Throughout the late 80’s and 90’s Gang Starr was a staple of Hip Hop culture. With Guru on the mic, and DJ Premier commanding the boards like a titan, the crew blazed trails of authentic street music for over 15 years. Yet, somehow in this day and age , they are often left out of conversations regarding Hip Hop’s illest crews. In my humble opinion, anyone who doesn’t recognize Gang Starr is not a true head.
Last weekend, Guru had a cardiac arrest and as a result fell into a coma. Twitter lit up almost instantaneously with updates and prayers for the suffering legend. Many of us began dropping quotes, song titles, and other Gang Starr trivia as a way to remind ourselves of the crew’s true greatness. It felt good. I hadn’t thought about some of these songs for over 10 years. It was then that I decided to dedicate the show to the crew, in the hope that the positive energy would aid in Guru’s recovery. Indeed, prayer is powerful and thoughts are things. This is a quick overview of one of the most prodigious groups that Hip Hop has ever known. Sit back, burn one and enjoy…Gang Starr y’all. The Real. Hip Hop.

Gang Starr’s Guru in Coma

February 28th, 2010

Guru of the legendary rap group Gang Starr is presently in a coma as a result of complications from experiencing cardiac arrest over the weekend. My prayers go out to the brother, sending light and guidance that God will pull him thru this tumultuous time. The first time I heard Gang Starr was when they dropped “Manifest”. DJ Premier flipped Charlie Parker’s “Night in Tunisia”, and Guru dropped knowledge with calm precision, after that song, I was hooked. The crew was one of the first to soulfully fuse jazz and hip hop with a perfect balance of booming melodics. Having released 8 LP’s, they are sure to go down in the hall of fame. Please spread the word, and send good energy to the bredren that he may pull thru this challenge successfully. Give thanks…peace…

Oh the joys of traveling. I speak of incredibly long drives, occasionally terrible food, and the inspiration of finding new locales that feel like home. In this case, on this tour, I’ve been most impressed by New Orleans. Out of the 28 cities that we’ve passed thru, the jewel by the bayou is the one that has really stood out for me. This was my first visit back since Katrina, and I was more fascinated than surprised by what I encountered. Bourbon Street was still the same, drunken revelry at every turn. Yet, it seemed like the rest of the city was under reconstruction. There are vacant buildings and for sale signs everywhere, and the inevitable decay of the 18th French architecture is prevalent. At the same time, people bustle to and fro, intoxicated by the fragrant aroma of the New Orleans lifestyle. Being one of the oldest cities in the US, it is apparent that the roots run deep. It stands alone as a symbol of the trials and tribulations of African Americans, and the history of the states in general. I could feel the presence of the Spanish and French colonizers there. Although, I’m sure it will never be the same as it was before Katrina, there are still horn lines and delightful cuisine in the hearts of those strong enough to persist on thru the hard times. Hats off to the people of the New Orleans. For the record, I’m glad the Saints won, they deserved that, at the very least.

massive-attack

Yee! Barely got this show together…but the music gods were looking out for ya boy. I’m coming in live from the backstage of a club in Tampa, Florida, with subs and bass kicks raging in the background. Hey, we do the best we can with what we have. This week features a gang of rare gems from across the boom diaspora of music, specifically the legendary crew Massive Attack. Starting back in the late 80’s, this crew has defied musical categories, and instead have pushed the limits of varied genres and styles. The remixes on the show are melodic dub landscapes sprinkled with lush vocals, their classic trademark. Many of these jams are brand spanking new, having just been discovered thru in-depth bloggery. Enjoy family…more to come. Stay tuned. Mind-Body-Spirit. ONE

Respect all massive and crew! I’m doin’ it movin, literally this week , as I broadcast straight from the van heading south towards NYC. There is something acutely surreal about touring and recording at the same time. While cars and trucks rush by, I capture bits and pieces of reality as they whirl past. It’s almost as if it’s a metaphor for the constant gush of information in this day and age. With so much media available, how does one sift thru and pick what they want to allow into their range of perception? For some, it is a choice, for others it is simply succumbing to the incessant barrage of programming shoved down our throats. As for myself, I have chosen to be quite snobby about what I allow into my mind, conscious and otherwise. I realize that whatever the mind views, it perceives as reality. That includes commercials, horror movies, reality shows, whatever he receives. This is exactly the same reason why the imagination is so powerful. If you can imagine something over and over again in your mind, you begin to charge your behavior with that imagery, and draw it closer to yourself subconsciously. With that said, strive to be aware of what types of energy that you allow into your mind. Ask yourself if this is the type of thing you want to experience. Don’t be passive, make an active choice about the energy that is created in and thru you. Shouts out to J Dilla (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006) & Bob Marley (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981). Science of Breath Radio: Live on Tour!!

January 28th, 2010

img_0260

Live from the road, one mo ‘gin! Wow…this tour has been cracking the whole time. Literally, we’ve had 13 shows and only one hasn’t been sold out. Niceness. I’ve always been about message music, but seeing the effect that this tour is having on people has helped me to further realize the true strength of good music. People have been leaving every night feeling uplifted and stronger than when the first came in. It’s a blessing to be able to touch people’s lives this way. With so much turmoil in the world, it’s amazing how much effect something simple like a song can have on one’s psyche. Music has always been my chosen mode of medication. I used to play certain songs to hype me up to play hoop or soccer, and I’d play other joints to soothe the pain of an argument with my girl. It’s all encompassing, universal, and addictive. Give thanks for the power of vibration, for through it, we are all created. Be aware of the vibrations you create, for they will echo back to you eventually. Enjoy the show…spread love.

More Freestyles w/ Rebelution & Soja

January 23rd, 2010

Wow…this tour has been ill!! After nearly 10 years of touring, this is definitely the most successful one that we’ve been on thus far. What a blessing! We’ve done shows up and down the west coast, 9 thus far, and all have been sold out. It’s such a pleasure to rock with humble souls spreading good energy and intention every night. I suppose this is the type of thing that the world needs in this moment. Enough really can’t be said about emphasizing the “brighter side of life” as stated by Rebelution. I’m with that, totally and completely. Peep the movements and stay up with us as we spread love.

Science of Breath Radio: Ragga Style

January 22nd, 2010

thewireoctober200707

Hail up all massive! Today’s show is focused on reggae music. Since we’re currently on tour with ragga champions Rebelution & Soja, I was in the mood to honor the vibes. I didn’t get a chance to upload their music yet, but that’s coming very soon. The tour has been incredible thus far. Every show has been sold out thus far, 8 in a row. This is definitely the largest tour that we’ve ever been on. Give thanks! With so much chaos in the world, it feels good to be around some calming, introspective musicians and music. Each night the vibe is extraordinarily mellow and chill. Niceness. Thus, I wanted to share some of that laid back cool with y’all. So, sit back and be easy, this one is for the mind. In addition to this, Zion I is also offering 5 free songs to our fans. Simply send a text message to 50500, and write Zioni. You will receive a link by which to download the songs. Guidance and protection family…stay tuned to the Science. Bless!

the Book of Eli: Review by Zumbi

January 19th, 2010

THE BOOK OF ELI

I have to admit that when I first saw the trailer for Denzel’s new film, “the Book of Eli”, it came across as campy and redundant. The landscape looked quite dreary, and there didn’t seem to be much room for character depth in this decrepit environment. I felt that it would be a weak version of the Road Warrior. Needless to say, I would not be making a trip to the cinema for this low brow sci-fi dribble. But, how wrong I was.

The Book of Eli is a serious look at faith under the most horrendous of predicaments. In this way it brings to mind the footage of people in Haiti singing songs and dancing, in lieu of catastrophe. When there is nothing else left, the spirit is the bed on which we all lay. The film is set in the near future, 30 years after “the Flash”, some type of apocalyptic event which has scorched the Earth to a dull dry hull of itself. The only people left have been reduced to animal instinct, and savagery rules the land. Everyone that is, except for Eli, who is played with smoldering intensity by Denzel. We are told that his character has been walking west for the last 30 years.

the_book_of_eli-9

Eli is much like the lone gunman in old school westerns, or the samurai, traveling across a deadly land with a razor sharp blade in hand. Although he is a master of destruction, it is quite obvious that his morality and spiritual conviction have not been corrupted by the wasted world around him. He is the light in the darkness, a brave soul impassioned by forces beyond his comprehension to deliver the last Bible on Earth to a safe location somewhere out west. Eli is not even sure where he must deliver the sacred book, yet his faith carries him forward.

Within this rough and tumble world, basic necessities like food and water are a luxury. Many have become cannibals as a means of survival, these parasites are easily identified by their shaking hands. Once he comes across a fledgeling town fighting for survival, we meet the misguided Carnegie who seeks only to use the last Bible in existence for his own selfish means. We also meet Solara, who becomes Eli’s confidant and road dog.

2009dec20_the-book-of-eli_cu-still4
The arc of the story feels natural, and the dialogue is well written. The muted tones of sepia and gray wash over every scene, giving the perception of choking dilapidation and despair. Yet, hope steadily reigns supreme. This is the tale of a futuristic prophet, protected by the loving embrace of God’s will. Indeed, Eli is a mortal man, but he is under the auspice of the Almighty. As the saying goes, “Who Jah bless, no man curse”. This is an inspiring film, as art and as message.

PRESS
www.kflay.com

SAN FRANCISCO, CA—September 1, 2009—While putting the finishing touches on her debut album, 24-year-old rapper and producer K.Flay is releasing a mixtape teaser, MASHed Potatoes. Mixed and produced by the San Francisco-based artist, MASHed Potatoes is a re-imagining—both sonically and lyrically—of eleven different tracks from artists like Kanye West, The Gossip, Missy Elliott, and more. The project features fellow West Coast artists Zumbi (of Zion I), Eligh (of Living Legends), and MC Lars.

MASHed Potatoes is a blend of hip-hop, electro, and indie rock,” explains K.Flay. “I listened to everything as a kid—George Clinton and Snoop Dogg to Talking Heads and The Zombies—and you can hear all of it my music.”

Indeed, K.Flay’s sound reflects the eclectic influences in her life growing up. Born and raised in the soulful state of Illinois, she spent her childhood reading Ronald Dahl books, jamming out to Sgt. Pepper, and rocking Air Jordans a size too big.

At 18, K.Flay ventured to California to study at Stanford University. While in college, she discovered the power of midi interfaces and began writing, producing, and performing the unique blend of hip-hop and indie rock that has come to characterize her sound.

Hailed in URB Magazine’s “Next 100” issue as a rap girl with “a bad-ass style that comes straight from a feral and natural talent,” K.Flay has been making her mark on the music world, giving fans shins splints on both sides of the Mississippi.

Most recently, K.Flay is featured on Zion I’s “Coastin’” video and she is working with acclaimed DJ/producer Amp Live.

The Divide b/w the Hood & the Police in Oakland, CA

March 27th, 2009

The Divide b/w the Hood & the Police in Oakland, CA

Oakland, California March 27th, 2009. As I sit staring at my computer, I can’t help but be rattled by the fact that right down the freeway a massive 18,000 person memorial is being held for the four police officers murdered last week. I understand the grief and I understand the pain. What I don’t understand is why this amount of people don’t show up when “regular” folk get put down in the streets. Are the lives of police officers more valued than ours? It would seem from this celebration, that yes they are.
The lives of the police represent the life-blood of the system. This blood protects the interest of the wealthy, and those that govern the city, the state, and the country. Thus, they are held in high regard. At the memorial were high-level officials from across the state, the attorney general, the governor, our mayor. It is a grandiose affair to say the least.
The level of importance is even noticeable as you drive down 880 away from Oakland towards San Francisco. On the side of the freeway, a huge billboard celebrates the lives of the four officers slain on duty. The contrast comes when I think back to Oscar Grant. I have yet to see a billboard celebrating his life. The only representation I see for him is the rebellious graffiti scrawled on walls throughout West, East, and North Oakland.
Are the lives of these officers more important than Oscar Grant, and the 150+ people murdered in our fair city every year? In reality, no, each life is equally important. So, why do the powers that be celebrate the lives of police officers and regular people so differently? For the life of me, I do not understand.
At this point in time, Oakland, California is a powder keg waiting to explode. The youth here have nothing to look forward to with the deepening recession, rising unemployment rates, and youth programs being cut.
To throw salt in the wound, now the powers that be refuse to acknowledge the very communities that they are paid to protect. Why hasn’t Mayor Dellums offered a public forum for residents to vent frustrations, and discuss the difficulties being experienced? Why is our city falling in line with standard “governmental” policy when we are in an exceptional situation?
These are all questions that many of us have. To the youth, I implore you to seek greater understanding in these difficult times. “Fuck the Police” is an easy reaction to what’s going on. I feel that way sometimes too. But, every police officer is not bad, just like every person from the hood is not good. People are people, some are just messed up in the head. The system is what needs to be held accountable. Do not allow yourselves to be manipulated into becoming another statistic about murder rates in Oakland. If you’re going to fight, lets fight with our minds as a collective to change this rotting system. With love and respect…R.I.P. Oscar Grant and the countless other lives lost to senseless killings.

March 21 Pac Div, B.O.B., Janelle Monae, Micky Factz

March 22nd, 2009

March 21 Pac Div, B.O.B., Janelle Monae, Micky Factz

So, on Friday I was on a mission to see Janelle Monae because of all the hype
I was seeing on twitter. Everybody was making comments about how ill she was. First thing I did was head down to the Fader Fort as soon as I got downtown. As I entered the fray, I immediately saw what everyone was talking about. Just the intensity of her eyes alone was compelling. She moved around the stage with a choreographed drama that is rare these days. Her band was laced in a black and white theme, and the afro puff on the front of her head bounced to the grooves. She danced and mimed around stage with a fury. Nice up. I liked it. Now, I’m waiting to hear a really dope song that I can sing along with.

She was my favorite performer of SXSW. But, coming up a close second was Pac Div. I caught them at a show rocking beside the Cool Kids, U-God, and Asher Roth. Upon walking in on their set, I immediately noticed the natural camaraderie between cats. The reminded me of the glory days of the Pharcyde dancing together and moving onstage in sync, nix the inner turmoil. It’s good to see the west coast have dope representers. Dope..nuff said.
Moving forward, B.O.B. ripped with a live band at the nahright show. The brother was passionate, and the guitars hung heavy in the medium sized hall. I was digging the energy of his band too. Micky Factz came thru with his whole clique and repped for NY. He was cool, on some real lyrical bizness. Rap shit. I love this game!!!

March 18th: Zion I, G&E, Blu, U-N-I, Charles Hamilton, Brother Ali, Blues Scholars

March 20th, 2009

March 18th: Zion I, G&E, Blu, U-N-I, Charles Hamilton, Brother Ali, Blues Scholars

Y’all already this show was tight. I mean, just peep the lineup. All killer..no filler. Real. A very well executed lineup if I do say so myself.
I missed a gang of groups early in the night. But I’ve seen everyone live except U-N-I and Charles Hamilton. Regardless, the crowd was packed in from the first moment that doors opened up. I got to the venue as G&E serenaded the crowd with that imitable Cali soul. Eligh’s new unreleased joint blapped by the way. I forget the name, but I’m sure you’ll hear it on the new joint.
Moving forward, Charles Hamilton hit the stage. I was juiced to see him, what with all the hype the guy’s been getting. From first inspection, his skills are up to par. But, he was obviously faded as he berated the crowd for not being hyped enough. It didn’t blow my mind, but I heard he ripped at the nahright show. I wasnt there tho.
We hit the stage with the full band. We’ve done a few short shows with them before, but this was the first full jumpoff. Despite the wack sound system, the crowd was feeling us even through feedback. I couldn’t hear myself onstage as the keys and drum patches bashed each other thru the monitors. But, I stayed tuned as the heads bounced regardless. Grouch hit the stage with us for “Silly Puddy” & “Hit Em”, and Brother Ali got down with “Caged Bird”. Freshness.
We finished up with a dynamic version of “Birds Eye View” complete with solos from each member of the band. It felt good. Leaving the stage I could tell folks were feeling the vibes. Nothing but smiles, pounds, and hugs from SXSW. Mission Accomplished.

SXSW: March 17th- Hey Champ, Kid Sister, Datarock Showcase

March 18th, 2009

SXSW: March 17th- Hey Champ, Kid Sister, Datarock Showcase

The fabled SXSW music fest got off to a quick start with the Om co-sponsored showcase featuring the aforementioned artists. As I swam thru the densely packed room, it was easy to see that the crowd was eager for something hot. I went to the top of the roof where the industry heads mix, mingle and tell jokes over sweaty drinks. Not my steez, so I slid back downstairs to check out the bands.
Hey Champ turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I guess they’ve been co-signed by Lupe. Its not the type of stuff I generally listen to, but live I was feeling the energy. The drummer was live, and the lead vocalist held it down with a guitar in hand, and a keyboardist added the very momentary electric feel that everyone is on these days. They’re compositions were clean, and the singer’s voice carried over well.
Next up was Kid Sister. I’m not sure who’s in the group, but she had two dancers, and was also accompanied by Flosstradamus. Ok. First off, the stage felt overly busy from my perspective, too much going on in such a confined space. Next, I couldn’t hear her voice thru the mic. Hmmmm. She had decent energy, but for some reason I wasn’t very into the whole getdown.
Finally, Datarock jumped onstage sporting bright red tracksuits with their name written down the side of the arm. These guys were quirky. I wasn’t really into the lead singers voice, but he was energetic, and the band was hittin’. They went into a couple of James Brownish instrumentals which I was feeling the most. They also did funny things like switch instruments with each other, jump into the crowd, and stand on drums and berate the crowd. Nice. Even though the sound went out 3 times on them, they still kept it moving. I’m not sure I’d buy a cd, but live, at SXSW it was entertaining.
Stay tuned..more to come…

What’s good?!

March 16th, 2009

What’s good party people? Its been a hot minute and I apologize for being out of the loop. With the release of the Takeover a month ago, things have been quite hectic. Better believe that the excitement won’t cease for a moment, as we leave for SXSW tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to flexing the new album, and our new band onstage. We’ve added a keyboardist (soon to be legend Kev Choice) and a drummer (Jetman). Rehearsals have been going well, and I can’t wait to get back out on the road with the band when our tour starts April 1st!
But, back to SXSW…our two main shows are Wed. & Thurs. but we’ll have several jump offs as I’ll be hosting with Amp while he DJ’s, and there’s still the possibility that I get down with Bassnectar on one of his nights.

Its going to be a wild weekend either way. Hold on tight..and stay tuned!

Michael Phelp’s Blazes the Chalice!!

February 3rd, 2009

Ah…the joys of life!  I love the fact that Michael Phelps was caught smoking a bong!  Yes.  First of all, he smoke(d)…but still managed to win the most Olympic Gold medals in history.  Quite possibly, the trees helped his lung capacity.  Nah,  I doubt that.  But, it does help to show, contrary to all these anti-marijuana commercials,  that it does not turn one into a virtual slug.  No.  Marijuana is not the demon that the government once tried to make it.  In truth, in these dreary economic times, I feel that the legalization of weed would make it  a valuable cash crop.  That being said, it could help create jobs and industry in local economies nationwide.  Lets hope that Obama sees what I see.

But seriously, I’m not here to promote smoking.  If you do smoke, do it with moderation.  Its a powerful herb, and when not respected properly, it can have negative effects.  Yet, at the same time, the resounding evidence that it is  less addictive than tobacco and alcohol gives creedance to the fact that it should be legal.  To Michael Phelps…a round of applause for being human.

The Conflict Between Israel & Palestine

January 28th, 2009

With gruesome pictures of the the Israeli bombardment of Gaza circulating widely on the net, it is no wonder why this age old conflict has resurrected itself yet again. More... In fact, it never really left.  This region is home to sacred religious sites of 3 of the world’s most prominent religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  Could this be the very reason why  this conflict continues to persists?  Is there something that we as a world community can do to quell the senseless killing of man, woman, and child?  I pray that there is an answer.  I’m interested to see what line Obama will take on this conflict, seeing as though the US sternly backs Israel with military technology and funding.  Strange days indeed…

Black Man Shot in the Back by BART (??) Police!

January 5th, 2009

We’ve started another year, but it seems like the corruption of our law enforcement is still on the same BS!  This past New Years Day, 22 year old Oscar Grant was shot in the back while he lay face down already under control by two police officers.  You can see for yourself in the following video that the officer uses lethal force without just cause.

When I saw this clip I became nauseated.  I’m sick and tired of the police being able to use Black folks as targets.  Its time that we stand up and hold these murderers accountable.  In Greece, they just finished having riots because a 15 year old boy was shot without justification by police.  What will we do to redeem the spirit of Oscar Grant?  Below the clip is a listing of people you can contact in order to bring about some justice.  Please spread the word if the blood is still warm in your veins.

by Dave Cook 5 Things You Can Do Right Now About the Oscar Grant Shooting

Share w/ your peeps

1. Digg the story so that the national media can pick up on it (Thanks, Jabari For this link): http://digg. com/world_news/Oakland_Police_Officer_Shoots_Unarmed_Man_Handcuffed_Man<br><br>or<br>http://digg. com/world_news/Oakland_Police_Officer_Shoots_Unarmed_Man_Handcuffed_Man?OTC-em-st1

2. Contact BART Director Carole Ward Allen and demand that 1) the officers involved be taken off duty without pay and charged and fully prosecuted; 2) there be an independent investigation of the shooting that includes a review of training and hiring practices; and

3) BART establish an independent residents’ review board for the police Call her at 510-464-6095 or email the BART Directors at BoardofDirectors@bart.gov

3. Call the BART police to complain about the officers’ conduct and demand immediate action:  Internal Affairs: Sergeant David Chlebowski 510.464.7029,dchlebo@bart.gov Chief of Police: Gary Gee 510.464.7022, ggee@bart.gov<br><br>Call them toll free at 877.679.7000 and press the last four digits of the phone number you wish to reach.

2012 Trailer

November 24th, 2008

I just found this randomly whilst checkin out some of the new flicks comin out.  This clip is pretty bugged out.  It definitely feels like an Apocalypse Now vibe.  I don’t know if I agree with this type of propaganda…but it still looks pretty interesting.  It seems like a style over substance kinda deal.  I hope the acting isn’t terrible.  It already reminds me of “The Day After Tomorrow” mixed with “V”, with a dash of “BattleStar Galactica”.  Think about it.

Obviously this film will only spurn the rising infatuation with this phenomena.  Either way its a subject that people are going to be talking about.  Many believe that the end of the Mayan Calender is the stuff of fairy tale and superstition.  Some say that it is the end of the world.  While still others believe that it is the awakening of humanity to a higher consciousness.  Only time will tell.  But in the meantime…I’m open to the possibility of the collective upgrading of our species.  Peep game..and get back wit commentary..

The First African American President!

November 6th, 2008

In the aftermath of one of the most auspicious days of my life..I am humbled by the fact that the United States has elected an African American. As I roamed the streets of the Bay, I witnessed unparalleled revelry in people of all races. Yet, for Africans in America it was obviously a day of great historical significance.
Since our introduction to North America, the African has consistently been a staple of industry, strength and resource. During slavery, our forced labor propelled America forward into first world dominance. At the same time, the black nanny raised the slavemasters children for hundreds of years.
As we move, the African has always served in America’s wars. The first man to die in the Revolutionary War was Crispus Attucks, a black man. The 54th Massachusetts Regiment died for freedom during the civil war. Thru modern times, we have always made up a large portion of the armed forces. Though we are 12% of the US population, we represent roughly 30% of the military.
We have bled for equality consistently for 400 years. We have hung from trees. We have marched and protested. We have survived lynch mobs, dogs, systematic oppression, and poor schooling. We have braved injustice and brutality at every turn. Yet, still we rise.
The spirit of the African is one that has been wounded, but cannot be broken. So, on Nov. 4th when Barack Obama became the first African American president, it was no wonder why I saw my folks jumping for joy and crying in the streets. Honestly, it was the first time that I saw black folks collectively happy since I went to the Million Man March in ‘95. It was the moment that our ancestors died for, what MLK lived for, and what we always dreamed of.
The catharsis felt by 40 million descendants of both kings, and slaves was tangible. For all that we’ve been thru, this one moment is a symbol of the triumph of spirit which we truly embody. Many will try to detract from the glory of the times, but for us, its something you can’t take away. The Bible states that “the first shall be last, and the last shall be first”. I’m not a proponent of politics, but I am a proponent of change. Celebrate and rejoice, then return to the grind, as we work towards a better day. History is made today.

Kimbo KO’d!!

October 5th, 2008

The first time I saw Kimbo, I was like “Damn!! This fool is a hood super hero..” I mean cmawn..he would hop out the whip. Stroll up rocking a chain. Then, he’d commence to whoop ass! It was pretty entertaining and often funny. He seemed unstoppable. Some fights were better than others, but they all showcased Kimbo’s hulking haymakers. That is except for the one, where he fought some tall ex MMA dude…and MMA guy ends up putting Kimbo to rest in a drawn out slug fest to the finish. For me, that was the one insight I needed into the phenomena of Kimbo. It seemed to me then, that the guys he was fighting before were just homies off the street, walk ups. They weren’t in the gym training and conditioning professionally. That difference made Kimbo look like a throw back to modern myths like Iron Mike Tyson in his early internet days. But, as the tale unravels, I fear that my suspicion is correct. In this clip, he gets beat down by what looks to me like an average fighter. The guy who beat him was a last second fill in. 14 seconds. 1 punch. In fact, this almost doesn’t look real. This may be the end of the once famed Kimbo. All praise to the almighty internet.

America: Gone are the Days of Grandeur

October 1st, 2008

As I sit contemplating the prospect of America’s economic failure, a dark cloud looms over my head.  How did we get to this dreaded point?  What will this mean for the commoner?
Is this just more media hype?
With Obama surging past McCain, and the stock markets dropping precipitously, something feels different about this moment.  It’s as if the decades of careless opulence have caught up with us.  No longer will the “American” image be one of glamour and wealth.  Our lack of leadership has made sure of that.  Our ill-conceived dependence on foreign oil has backed us into a corner.  The question is whether we can fight our way out of this one.  Sure, we bounced back from the Great Depression, but it took a World War to do it.  In this day, we are already at war, and it no longer stimulates the economy as it once did.  Huge defense money is recycled thru the dirty hands of politicians, and big business…while young people die in the sand.  It’s a wicked cycle.
Meanwhile, the American public champions wack performers like Sarah Palin.  After 8 years without legitimate leadership, somehow we are still fascinated by the fashion show which is American politics.  It’s downright shameful.  We’ve allowed the media to lash us back and forth in a popularity contest based on color and gender.
It’s perplexing that the masses are so ignorant to mistake flash, for true leadership capability and insight.  For, as the country struggles under the combined weight of 8 years of mismanaged government: (the S&L scandal,  Enron, 9/11, war in the Middle East, rising gas prices, the devalued dollar & the mortgage crisis)…the crooked barons who’ve lead us here are not even questioned.  Needless to say, they will be the least effected by the chaos since they’ve taken sufficient time to pad their pockets.
We live in changing times, in a crucial moment.  How will we handle this great responsibility?  The entire world watches with baited breath, as the true meaning of globalization is slowly realized.  I pray that we can come together as a diverse, but unified people and overcome this challenge.  But, with fear, greed, and racism at a seemingly all time high, it feels like the chances are slim.  Yet, there is still the opourtunity to fly in the face of convention and finally, once and for all, do the right thing.  We will soon truly see what the American people are made of.

Zion I Rips Hip Hop Kemp

September 24th, 2008

About 3 weeks ago, Zion I flew out to Europe for a couple of high powered shows. Amplive was not in attendance, as he had just gotten married and was on his honeymoon, so we enlisted the skills of internationally recognized Vinroc to hold it down. The first show was the Royal Arena Festival in Switzerland. We landed on Friday morning, and by the evening we were sharing a rain soaked stage with De La Soul, Talib Kweli, as well as crews from South Africa and France. That show was dope, but it turned out to be a warm up compared to the epic size of Hip Hop Kemp.  Located about an hour and a half outside of Prague in the Czech Republic, we were ushered into what felt like a sleepy Eastern European town. Due to missing our flight from Switzerland into Czech, we had spent the morning trying to figure out how we were going to get there in time for the show. I had to shell out 700 euros to catch the only other flight out (shout out to karin @ subotage for getting my back!) So, by the time we got there, we all passed out.  4 hours later we were whisked away into the Hip Hop Kemp experience. The festival was held on an old airport hangar. Needless to say it was massive! The promoters claimed that upwards of 20,000 people were there! Real big. We had a great slot on the main stage around 10:30 pm. The crowd facing the stage stretched out before us with flags waving, heads bobbing, and hands in the air. I estimated the crowd at our show to be around 12000 to 14000 people. Its kinda hard to tell when its that many folks.  We came out with high energy, and they immediately embraced us. There were some people who knew the music, but a grip of people were feeling us for the first time. We bounced across the stage effortlessly, compelled by the lofty energy of the audience. Its amazing what a good vibe can do. We were dead tired before we hit the stage, but the moment completely transformed all of us.   Shout out to Vinroc for the footage and the edit!  I got a Bird’s Eye View…

Blacks Against Obama??

September 19th, 2008

I was watching Current TV…and this clip jumped off the screen! It starts off with Obama doin his thing. Suddenly, you notice a rowdy buzz. Obama strains to feign indifference. But the buzz grows into a slow roar, and suddenly the camera pans up to signs that read “KKK”?? What kinda shit is this? Then, I see that these are black folks!? Now its just weird. Given…some of my folks have definitely expressed concern about what Obama will actually be able to change when he gets in. I hear that. But it just feels ackward to read signs saying “Obama is for the KKK”. C’mawn man! I’m perplexed as to how a black man could ever rep that, no matter the point being made. I mean, I get what they’re trying to say (though I don’t agree), but damn?! Some would say that the Republicans paid these fools. At this point, who knows. Politics…makes me sick.

DJ Vlad Sues Rick Ross for Millions!!

August 31st, 2008

I’m sure most of you hip hop fanatics have heard about Rick Ross being exposed as a correctional officer back in the day. It seems ironic that a dude who claims the dope game as his birthplace was also a prison guard. Strange indeed. Yet, the saga continues. It seems that the homey DJ Vlad had posted an interview with the Clipse where they were discussing Rick Ross’s supposed “cop” background. Rick Ross got wind of this interview, and began text messaging DJ Vlad with cryptic messages. Somehow, while at the Ozone Awards, Rick Ross lured DJ Vlad into a hotel room, where 4 of his patnas beat DJ Vlad to a pulp. As a result, DJ Vlad is suing him, and with good reason. Its funny to me that Trick Daddy came out way before Vlad to air out Ross, but he did nothing to retaliate against Trick. Yet, when he had the chance to corner DJ Vlad, he went overboard. Now…is that gangsta??? Peep game…Rick Ross Exposedthe Clipse Interview…DJ Vlad/ Rick Ross Beef Synopsis

OBAMA Speech: 8/28/08

August 28th, 2008

I just watched Obama’s speech and was definitely trippin off of the historic magnitude of the moment. On the anniversary of MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech, Obama took the stage. Is this for real? At points, I felt like I was watching an episode of the Twilight Zone..or maybe a scene from Malcolm X. I don’t know. I felt joyous and elated with the fact that an African American had defied the odds by securing the Democratic nomination. Yet, the conspiracy brother in me could not help but feel slightly paranoid as the fireworks went off while Obama smiled with his family. Strange indeed. Maybe its me, but it all feels scripted in some bizarre way. Quite possibly I’m feeling this way because of the report that 3 men were arrested for talking about killing Obama, and were captured with meth and guns. I see that we’re breaking new ground, but is it the same old party line with a new face? Is this some grand move of Masonic trickery? Its hard to tell. I’m voting Obama for sure, but of the political system in general, I’m still not a believer.obama

Crazy OBAMA Illustrated in “the New Yorker”

August 6th, 2008

I know we’re making history in this country, with the first black presidential candidate and all. I also know that politics is a dirty game. What I don’t know is how much racism from the collective unconscious of America will have to spew forth before we can move forward into a new day. Presumably, the muck-slinging has just begun, and I’m sure its going to get worse. The preview was Hillary, and her forthright attacks on Obama’s race and class. I can only imagine what McCain is going to come with.
Case in point is the below illustration. Boy, the dude who drew this must really be scared. In his mind, he must equate blackness with anarchy and chaos, as is evidenced by the flag burning in the fireplace and a portrait of Bin Laden on the wall. He also has Michelle dressed like some neo-militant, and has Barack in traditional middle eastern garb. To add to this, they’re giving each other the “terrorist” handshake…which just happens to be the ol skool greeting of choice amongst folks, but I guess white America doesn’t know that?? Strange. I guess its supposed to be funny. Hardy ha ha…

Zion I @ SXSW

July 15th, 2008

SXSW is a music festival held annually in the performance mecca of Austin, Texas. With nearly 300 live venues, pubs, andhalls lined up and around 6th St., musicians and filmmakers descend in vast numbers to promote and network. The range of styles is tremendous, though leaning heavily on the indie rock side.

Every year the hype seems to change up a bit, as the groups with albums coming out,or a new record deal tend to have fans packed in to see them. It’s always a trip to walk 6th St. as its teeming with groupies, rockers, rappers, and fans. The street is blocked off, and the cacophony of sound issuing out into the atmosphere is ill. Everywhere we turned, music assaulted our senses. Loud boisterous rocktunes ripped out of nearly every speaker. Country, emo, punk, and pop rock all blended into a smoothie of electric sludge. Once in awhile, a club beat would jump out of the chaos, naturally pulling my ears to the 808’s.

Don’t get me wrong though, hip hop was definitely in the house. The standouts were the StonesThrow/Duck Down showcase, the Def Jux party, and the Kork showcase (where we rocked). At the Stones Throw joint, Sean Price (of Helter Skelter fame) grimaced on dirty hooks, and stuttering beats. Guilty Simpson also came thru repping Detroit to the fullest. With a vocal tone reminiscent of the late great J Dilla, his gun talk and rugged posture left the crowd thirsty for more. Dope. I also got to check Dizzy Rascal at the Def Jux jump off. The UK mc came off with raucous production, and his signature squawk.

We rocked with the Living Legends, and C Rayz Walz. As we walked up to the venue, a long line cut into the street. Ironically, it was the same club that we performed at last year with UGK. Rest in Peace Pimp C. We were lucky enough to be able to perform with a real live legend before he left the Earth. Besides that, the only difference is that this time the crowd was totally with us,bouncing to every beat, all smiles and cheer. We ran thru our set with a quickness, touching songs from albums to mixtapes alike. Afterwards, we slid into the warm Austin night, to peep whatever was left of the festivities.

Shoutout to Carlito for lacing the crew with fly denim at the Fader party. Big up all the homeys from across the globe that came down to hustle and spread the word about their grind. With the industry changing so quickly, SXSW is one of the few places where different genres can mix and match, as we collectively seek the prosperity of yesteryear. Stay hustling…Big up!!
